If you want to relax in the centre of Tuscany, among the green hills of Chianti and surrounded by the wonderful landscapes, you can do this in Petrognano. The village of Petrognano is on the green hills and vineyards round the street that takes to Certaldo from Barberino. It is a group of old houses, but if we look better, we’ll see stone towers with smart and finely decorated arches: city houses with medieval towers secluded in the countryside.
But that’s not a mystery: Petrognano is the village that belonged to a city called Semifonte. Dante mentions it in the 16th canto of the Divine Comedy : “Fiorenza fatti in là, Semifon diven città”. Now the centre is no more there, it was razed to the ground in 1202. After an epic siege and the bloody final battle of that war, the city surrendered and disappeared with its inhabitants who were sent into exile.
In the farm there’s the old parish church of Saint Peter, then reduced to mere chapel. Inside there is still the wood crucifix from the 12th century that is now in the parish priest’s residence in Certaldo. A stone with coat of arms is walled up under the alter. This probably belonged to a valorous defender of Semifonte.
The farm has flats far from the main street and are independent and rural. The owners have also restored them preserving the ancient characteristics of the past. Surrounded by olive-trees and secular trees far from the from street, the farm offers facilities for your free time, plays for children, a volley-ball ground and a swimming-pool where you can watch the sunset in the valley in the hot summer evenings.

CAMPANELLINO

A charming ground floor apartment next door to the little chapel and with its own terrace for dining out of doors from where there are views across the valley. Campanellino has been well presented with terracotta floors, beamed ceilings and some fine natural stone walls adding to the character. Own entrance into double bedroom. Open archway through into open plan sitting/dining room with Tuscan fireplace and kitchen area (gas hob and fridge,microvelle,TV). Shower room. Furnishings throughout are in rustic style. A cot can be supplied on request (charged extra).
